And some less important matters with perhaps some less lofty goals as well.

Technologies

I'll be utilising some of my favourite technologies and writing about how I use them. Here is a brief list to whet the appetite:

• duckdb (so good).
• the r programming language, in particular, the ggplot library.
• the rust programming language (my favourite language?).
• nushell, cause life's too short to stay POSIX compliant.
• helix the text editor, because sometimes it's great to have batteries included.
• Google Cloud Platform, which is my favourite cloud platform to use.

Overall, for fun and performance, I prefer using the terminal for my data work 🚀

Data

There are many great open source and publically available datasets in which to gain valuable insights about how the world is functioning, or not. Here are some that I've explored (that I'll be writing up here), along with some on my todo list:

• Global database of events, language and tone (GDELT).
• Google Trends.
• Armed conflict, location and events database (ACLED).
• North Korean missile testing dataset.
• News articles, typically via RSS.
• WWII German Uboat attack dataset.

There are many more, but the above is fairly representative of what sort of data is of interest here 📊

Insights

In this blog, I'll be utilising technology that I enjoy, to gain insights about the real world. I'll be exploring meta aspects of technology and nerdy things too.
